Why Staying Hydrated is a Game-Changer for Your Gym Sessions đź’§

At The Fit Club, we talk a lot about effort, consistency, and recovery — but there’s one thing that underpins it all: hydration.

When you’re training hard, especially during the warmer months, staying properly hydrated isn’t just a nice-to-have — it’s critical for performance, recovery, and safety. Whether you’re smashing weights, sweating through a Hyrox class, or pushing your limits on the cardio machines, your body needs water to do its job.

Why Hydration Matters in the Gym

Your body is made up of around 60% water. When you exercise, especially in a hot gym or during an intense session, you lose a lot of that water through sweat. Even just 2% dehydration can negatively impact your performance — slowing you down, weakening your output, and increasing the risk of dizziness, cramps, and fatigue.

Here’s what staying hydrated helps with during workouts:

  • Regulates body temperature

  • Lubricates your joints so you move smoothly

  • Delivers nutrients to muscles for better recovery

  • Keeps energy levels up so you can go the distance

Let’s put it simply: water fuels your workout just as much as food or sleep. Neglect it, and you’ll feel the difference.

How Much Water Should You Be Drinking?

Everyone’s needs are slightly different, but a good rule of thumb is:

  • At least 2 litres per day for general hydration

  • An extra 500ml–1 litre for every hour of exercise

  • Start sipping 30–60 mins before your session, drink during where possible, and top up afterwards

If you’re a heavy sweater or doing intense cardio (especially in hot conditions), you’ll need even more.

Pro tip: don’t chug a litre in one go. Your body absorbs water best when you sip steadily throughout the day.

What About Hydration Drinks & Electrolytes?

Water is your go-to, but there are times when hydration drinks or electrolytes can be useful — especially if you’ve had a long or super sweaty session.

Look out for:

  • Electrolyte tablets or powders that replenish sodium, potassium, and magnesium

  • Coconut water as a natural alternative

  • Avoid drinks high in sugar or artificial colours — they’re often more hype than help

If you’re doing back-to-back classes, training outdoors in heat, or prepping for an event like HYROX, using an electrolyte boost can help with recovery and reduce muscle cramps.

Hydration for Everyday Life

Even outside the gym, hydration affects your focus, energy, skin, digestion, and sleep. That afternoon slump? It’s often dehydration, not hunger or tiredness.

Quick tips:

  • Keep a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day

  • Flavour your water with fresh fruit or cucumber if plain water gets boring

  • Limit dehydrators like caffeine and alcohol, especially in hot weather
